What is Near Field Communication?

Near field communication (NFC) allows devices such as smartphones and tablets to communicate by bringing them into close proximity. Unlike Bluetooth, there is no need to pair the devices. Most NFC communication works by tapping the devices together or holding them within an inch or two. The famous bump to transfer photos between Samsung Galaxy S5 phones works via NFC.

The most practical use of NFC is as a payment method.

You could pay for a meal via a tap of your phone, which would activate an app that charges your bank account or credit card. However, NFC as a method of payment has yet to take off.

One of the most popular uses for NFC are small magnetic strips that can be used to program a device. For example, the Trigger app for Android devices can read an NFC strip and perform a task on the device, such as putting the phone in silent mode or automatically playing music.
