Can I Get Wi-Fi to Work on My iPod Touch Even Though I Don't Have In-Home Wi-Fi?
- Your iPod comes with the ability to use a Wi-Fi network. You have several options when it comes to what Internet source you use. If you cannot afford in-home Wi-Fi, you can use public hotspots at your local library, restaurants, hotels and retail stores. Many retail locations post information about free Wi-Fi as a benefit to their customers.
- You can try to use a tethering service available from your cellphone carrier. Tethering is the ability to use your data plan on your cellphone and tether it to an additional electronic device such as a laptop or mobile technology device such as the iPod Touch. This tethering service usually costs an additional fee; however, it may be worth it to you if you do not have an in-home Wi-Fi service. An alternative is purchasing an Aircard or personal hotspot device. These devices create a Wi-Fi hotspot on their own.
- If you have a friend, relative or neighbor with Wi-Fi, you can ask for their secured password for their Wi-Fi account. This gives you access to their Wi-Fi signal for use on your iPod Touch. Your iPod Touch remembers the password and logs into that signal whenever it is within reach of the signal. Never hack someone else's Wi-Fi signal without their express permission.
- Open up the Settings application on your iPod Touch. Tap on the "Wi-Fi" line to view a list of available Wi-Fi connections. Wi-Fi connections with a lock icon on them are not open to the public. You need a password to access this connection. Networks without a lock are considered open and are accessible to the public.
