How to Set Up a Pontoon With a Downrigger

    • 1). Install a side gunnel, top gunnel or rail mounting base for the downrigger. Follow the manufacturer's directions for installing the mount. Consider choosing a mount for your pontoon boat that features quick adjust knobs for easily installation and removal.

    • 2). Attach the downrigger to the mounting base attached to the pontoon boat. Place the downrigger on the base and lock it securely in place with the attached locking levers. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for further information and specifics based on the particular model of downrigger and mounting base.

    • 3). Attach a cannonball weight to the end of the downrigger cable. Choose a weight that is 1 pound or heavier based on fishing conditions, desired depth and personal preference. Open the clip at the end of the downrigger cable. Attach the clip to one eye on the cannonball weight.

    • 4). Attach a short quick release to the other eye on the cannonball weight. Open the snap on the end of the quick release cable and attach it to the eye on the weight.

    • 5). Attach a baited hook or lure to the end of your fishing line. Release the line from your fishing rod. Pull out the desired amount of line from the reel. Pull at least 10 feet of line from the reel as a rule of thumb. Form a loop in the line and attach it to the quick release clip.
