- 1). Connect the rod to a baitcasting reel, which is the type that sits above the rod handle. Spool the rod and reel with 8-pound test or heavier fishing line, and attach a 1/4-oz. or heavier lure to the line.
- 2). Hold the rod and reel in your dominant hand. Grab the butt end of the rod with your other hand.
- 3). Push the thumb bar so the reel spool spins freely. Place your thumb on the spool to stop it from spinning.
- 4). Swing the rod over your casting shoulder. At its furthest point, the rod should be at a 45-degree angle with the back of your shoulder.
- 5). Swing the rod back over your casting shoulder. When the rod and reel are past your shoulder, release your thumb from the spool, allowing the weight of the lure to carry line off the spool as the lure travels through the air.
- 6). Push down on the spool with your thumb as the lure is about to hit the water.
- 7). Turn the reel handle clockwise to reel in your lure.
