- 1). Locate tuna in deep saltwater with the use of an electronic fish finder.
- 2). Chum the water in the area where the tuna are located. Use cut and ground fish spread on the water surface and upper water column to draw fast swimming tuna up and near your boat.
- 3). Cast a tuna jig into the water and allow it to settle at the depth where tuna are indicated on the fish finder.
- 4). Raise the rod tip to move the jig up through the water and then allow it to settle back down. Maintain a tight line as many tuna strikes happen as the jig falls down through the water.
- 5). Count slowly to between five and 10 when a tuna initially takes the jig before setting the hook. Reel in on the line and raise the rod tip to set the jig hook. Hang on for a fight that could last between 30 minutes and one hour.
