How to Fix a Laptop Cable Lock
- 1). Turn the combination locks on the side of the cable lock several times to refresh the lock on the cable. You need to clear out the lock before using it, otherwise it may stay on the actual combination, which prevents the lock from staying locked.
- 2). Double-check your combination. If you are not entering the combination correctly it will not unlock the cable. Also, make sure the number is directly in the middle of the combination display. If one of the numbers is slightly off-center, it will not unlock the cable.
- 3). Look at the cable to make sure it is small enough to fit through the locking strap on the laptop computer. The locking strap is on the corner of your laptop. Some laptop cables and wires are rather large and may not fit on some computers.
- 4). Apply some WD-40 to the lock if it is not spinning. If exposed to water or moisture, the lock can begin to rust on the inside, making it hard to turn. A lock that cannot turn is useless. However, when WD-40 is applied, it lubricates the lock, allowing the numbers to turn again.
- 5). Cut the lock with heavy-duty wire cutters. If the lock simply won't budge or come off of your computer, you can find a pair of heavy-duty cutters at most home improvement stores.
