How to Make a Wicker Basket

    • 1

Create a woven base for the basket.
Lay five long reeds vertically on a flat surface. Carefully weave five more reeds in and out of the vertical five reeds, creating a four-inch square in the center. Adjust the reeds, making them even and perpendicular to each other.

Using clothespins, carefully bend up the corners of the basket, securing them tightly. Gently bend the reeds in a pattern, one up and one down, all along the side of the basket. Find a reed in the center of one side, and split it down the middle using scissors. Weave the split reed in and out of the other reeds, tucking the end of the split reed inside the base.

Using more reeds, weave them in and out of the base reeds. When you reach the end of a reed, tuck it securely on the inside of the basket. Repeat this process until you have three to four inches remaining of the base reeds sticking out of the top.

Trim off the reeds to make the edge even, leaving at least 1-1/2 inches sticking out at the top. Use a strong pair of scissors, such as kitchen shears, because reeds can be quite tough to cut through.

Tuck the reeds inside the basket, securing them into another woven reed on the underside. Make sure that you tightly secure the reeds.

Wrap a larger reed around the top edge of the basket. Sew it onto the basket by passing a thinner reed through the basket and around the larger reed. Continue to sew the larger reed on until you have gone all the way around the top edge. Tuck the end of the thinner reed securely into the inside of the basket.
