How to Restore a Registry on XP

    • 1). Click the Windows XP "Start" button in the task bar. Click "Run." Type "regedit" and press "Enter." This opens an editor that displays all registry keys. You can edit and restore registry keys from this editor.

    • 2). Click the registry editor's "File" menu item. Select "Restore" from the list of menu options. This opens a window where you specify your registry's backup file.

    • 3). Double-click the registry backup file. This can be a file on your hard drive or external media such as a disk or external hard drive.

    • 4). Click "Restore" to import the registry backup. If you are prompted to reboot the computer, click "Restart" for the settings to take effect.
