How to Replace the Horn on a Yamaha Road Star

    • 1). Insert the motorcycle's ignition key into the ignition switch. Turn the key counterclockwise to unlock the seat. Grasp the rider's portion of the seat, then lift it up and away from the gas tank. Lift the passenger's portion of the seat out of the catch near the rear fender. Set the seat aside.

    • 2). Remove the motorcycle's left frame cover, positioned to the left of the rider's seat rails. Unscrew the cover's mounting bolt with a 4-mm Allen wrench. Pull the tabs on the front of the cover away from the frame to reveal the motorcycle's battery. Unscrew the black negative cable from the battery's negative terminal using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the cable away from the battery and the motorcycle's frame.

    • 3). Remove the horn from its mounting bracket, positioned near the shift lever on the left side of the motorcycle. Unscrew the nuts on the back of the bracket, facing the motor, with a 10-mm wrench. Unscrew the mounting bolts from the front of the horn with a 4-mm Allen wrench.

    • 4). Pull the horn away from the frame. Unplug the pair of female electrical spade connectors from the top of the horn. Set the old horn aside.

    • 5). Plug the new horn into the motorcycle's female spade connectors. Bolt the new horn onto the horn bracket using a 4-mm Allen wrench. Screw the nuts onto the horn's bolts with a 10-mm wrench. Tighten the nuts to 4.5 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.

    • 6). Screw the negative battery cable onto the battery's negative terminal with a Phillips screwdriver. Push the tabs on the front of the frame cover into the frame's rubber grommet. Screw the cover's mounting bolt into place with a 4-mm Allen wrench.

    • 7). Push the tab on the rear of the passenger's seat into the catch near the rear fender. Lower the rider's portion of the seat into the seat lock mechanism near the gas tank. Press down on the rider's seat until the seat lock mechanism clicks shut.
