How to Replace the Speed Sensor on a 1999 Taurus

    • 1). Open the driver’s door and engage the emergency brake on your Taurus.

    • 2). Use a lug wrench to loosen each of the lug nuts on the front driver’s side wheel a quarter turn counterclockwise. Don’t loosen them any more, or you'll risk damaging the wheel studs.

    • 3). Raise the car with a car jack so that the bottom of the tire visibly measures no more than 6-inches from the ground. Place a jack under the car to help support the car during the repair.

    • 4). Remove all of the lug nuts from the wheel and then slide it off the wheel studs using both hands. Set the tire along with its lug nuts to the side of your work area.

    • 5). Locate the wheel speed sensor on the back of the hub assembly. It will be on the opposite side of the brake caliper and have a long black cable connected to it.

    • 6). Follow the speed sensor’s wire over to where it’s connected at the strut tower. Pop the wire out of the retaining clip, continue following the wire over to the clip on the frame rail, and remove it in the same fashion. Continue following the wire another 10 to 12 inches and you will come to its wiring harness plug. Unplug the speed sensor’s wiring harness plug by hand. Do not use any tools to do this or you may cause damage to the plug.

    • 7). Use a socket wrench to remove the bolt holding the speed sensor in place, and then withdraw the sensor from its mounting position.

    • 8). Install the new wheel speed sensor just as you removed it. Set your 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench to 95 in-lbs. and secure the speed sensor’s bolt in place.

    • 9). Reroute the new speed sensor's wire just as you removed the old wire. Make sure that you pop the wire back into place in both of the retaining clips before you plug the wiring harness plug back in.

Mount the tire back on its studs and return each of the lug nuts by hand. Tighten all of the lug nuts until snug, then remove the jack stand. Lower the car until the tire makes contact with the ground. Set your 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to 105 ft-lbs and continue tightening the lug nuts in a star pattern until they’re completely secured.
