How to Change a Starter Motor in a Chevy S-10 Pickup Truck

    • 1). Open the hood of your S-10 and remove the negative battery cable from the battery with a wrench or socket and ratchet. Set the cable aside and away from the battery while you work.

    • 2). Raise the front of the truck with a jack then slide a set of jack stands under the frame rails. Lower the truck onto the jack stands and remove the jack from under the truck.

    • 3). Locate the starter under the truck. It is on the left driver's side of the truck near the back of the engine. Locate the two electrical connectors on the rear of the starter solenoid and remove the retaining nuts with a socket and ratchet. Pull the wires off the terminals, making note of which wire comes off the "B" terminal and which comes off the "S" terminal.

    • 4). Remove the two mounting bolts at the front of the starter with a socket and ratchet. Lower the starter motor out of the engine compartment and set it aside.

    • 5). Raise the new starter into position, making sure to slide the nose of the starter into the hole in the bell housing until it is flush. Install the two mounting bolts into the starter and tighten them to 32 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.

    • 6). Install the electrical connectors on the terminal at the back of the starter solenoid. The large single, red wire attaches to the "B" terminal followed by the retaining nut. The smaller wire attaches to the "S" terminal also followed by the retaining nut. Tighten both retaining nuts with a socket and ratchet. The terminals are marked on the plastic case of the solenoid for identification.

    • 7). Lift the front of the truck off the jack stands with the jack then remove the stands from under the truck. Lower the tuck to the ground and remove the jack.

    • 8). Install the negative battery cable onto the negative battery terminal and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench or socket and ratchet. Test the repair by starting the truck.
