How to Check the Light Codes on the 1997 Mitsubishi Montero
- 1). Open the driver's door of the vehicle. Plug an OBD-II scanner into the OBD-II port. The OBD-II port is a bus port to the left of the steering column, behind the kick panel of the dashboard.
- 2). Turn the ignition key to the "II" position, or accessories. The accessories position activates all of the dashboard lights and some electronic functions. Do not turn the vehicle on for this test.
- 3). Turn the power on to the OBD-II scanner. Select "Read Codes" from the main menu of the scanner. There are a series of questions involving your vehicle's year, make and model, following the main screen. Select the correct information pertaining to your vehicle, using the "Up" and "Down" arrows. Press the "Read" key to accept all of your answers. When you have finished making your selections, the OBD-II machine will communicate with the vehicle's computer and present you with various numbers and information.
- 4). Write down each code and the information that accompanies the code, using a pen and paper.
