How to Partition a Windows XP HDD

    • 1). Place the XP CD in your computer's CD drive. Click the green "Start" button and select "Turn off computer" in the menu that pops up. Click the "Restart" button in the window that displays to restart your computer.

    • 2). Hit the "Enter" key on your computer's keyboard when the "Welcome to Setup" screen is displayed. Tap "F8" on your keyboard to confirm that you have read and agree to abide by the terms of use for Windows XP. Hit the "Esc." key when Windows notifies you that XP is already installed on your system.

    • 3). Hit the "C" key on your keyboard to begin the process of creating a new partition on your HDD. Use the number keys to type in the amount of space you would like the partition to contain in megabytes. Hit the "Enter" key to create the partition on your HDD.

    • 4). Tap the "F3" key on your keyboard twice to close "Windows Setup" and restart your computer. Remove the XP setup CD from your computer's CD drive. Windows will start like normal and the partition will be created and ready for use.
