How to Repair Windows XP Using Recovery

    • 1). Insert your Windows XP installation disc, then restart the computer.

    • 2). Press the key indicated by your screen immediately after restarting. You should see a "Press X to enter BIOS setup." Press the key indicated by "X."

    • 3). Tap your arrow keys to navigate to the "Advanced Boot Options." Select "CD/DVD drive" as your first boot device and "Hard disk" as your second boot device. The BIOS screen lists the navigational buttons at the bottom of the screen.

    • 4). Save and exit the BIOS.

    • 5). Press any key to boot from your Windows XP installation disc when prompted on screen.

    • 6). Press the "R" button at the "Welcome to Setup" screen.

    • 7). Press "1," then "Enter" to select "Windows XP" installation.

    • 8). Type your administrator password and press "Enter." Leave the "Password" field blank if you do not have an administrator password, and press "Enter."

    • 9). Delete files, copy files, fix the master boot record or other startup files, check your hard disk for errors, reformat your hard disk or perform other system-related functions. See Resources for a list of Recovery Console commands and switches.

      Type "exit" (without quotes), remove the installation disc and restart the computer after you type in all necessary commands.
