How to Increase Virtual Memory on a Dell Computer

    • 1). Click "Control Panel." The Control Panel will open.

    • 2). Click "System." A Tasks panel will open on the left of the screen.

    • 3). Click "Advanced system settings" in that pane to open the "System Properties" window. Tabs will appear at the top of the window.

    • 4). Click the "Advanced" tab. You will see a section named "Performance."

    • 5). Click "Settings" in the "Performance" section. The "Performance Options" window will open.

    • 6). Click the "Advanced" tab. The "Virtual memory" section will appear in the middle of the windows. The section contains a button named "Change."

    • 7). Click "Change" to open the "Virtual Memory" window. This is where you change the size of the Windows pagefile. The current size of the pagefile appears at the bottom of the window. Windows also displays a "Recommended" pagefile size.

    • 8). Click the check box next to "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" to clear the check box.

    • 9). Click "Custom Size." This will enable you to type values in the "Initial Size" and "Maximum Size" text boxes. The value that you enter for "Initial Size" will set the initial size of the Windows pagefile. The value that you enter for "Maximum SIze" will determine how big the pagefile can become.

      Enter values for "Initial Size" and "Maximum Size." Microsoft recommends setting "Initial Size" to 1.5 times the amount of your RAM and three times that number for "Maximum Size." Microsoft also notes that you can increase those amounts if you frequently use memory-intensive software.
