How do I Fish With a Wire Line?
- 1). Assemble your fishing gear. When fishing with wire line you will need to add backing line to the reel before adding the wire line. Most anglers fishing with wire line use either Dacron line or braided spectra line as backing line. You will also need to attach a monofilament leader to the terminal end of the wire fishing line. Both the backing line and the monofilament leader can be attached to the wire fishing line with swivels and haywire twists.
- 2). Manuever your boat to the area you want to fish. Using a fish finder sonar device can help you locate the best fishing areas.
- 3). Drop your lure into the water and pay out line until your lure reaches the depth at which you want to fish. Hold the rod away from the boat (approximately 20 degrees away from a point directly behind the boat) in order to avoid tangling the line.
- 4). Place the rod in the rod holder after you have paid out the desired amount of line. You should also adjust the drag on the reel so that line slides off the spool without requiring an undue amount of force. Otherwise the hooks can be ripped out of a striking fish's mouth due to the fact that wire lines do not strech like monofilament lines.
- 5). Watch the tip of the rod to detect a striking fish. Fish striking trolled lures generally hook themselves. While fighting, avoid pumping the rod. The pumping action permits slack to develop in the wire fishing line and gives the fish an opportunity to slip off the hook.
