How to Repair a Sway Bar on a 2000 Ford Explorer
- 1). Park the Explorer on a level surface with the front wheels pointed straight ahead. Set the parking brake. Raise the vehicle with a jack and support it with jack stands.
- 2). Remove the sway bar mounting bolts from the sway bar end links with a socket wrench. Examine the end links for signs of excessive wear, such as missing or cracked rubber bushings. Replace the end links if necessary.
- 3). Detach the sway bar mounting bolts from the frame with a socket wrench. Remove the bolts from the work area. Inspect the bushings for cracks and replace if necessary.
- 4). Install a new or repaired sway bar and mount the frame bolts with a socket wrench. Tighten the frame bolts to 25 ft.-lbs. with a torque wrench. Install the sway bar end links using a socket wrench. Tighten the end link nuts to 15 ft.-lbs. with a torque wrench.
- 5). Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle using the jack. Release the parking brake. Drive the vehicle at slow speeds to make sure the sway bar is operating properly.
