How to Remove the Instrument Panel on a 1979 Camaro
- 1). Take out the screws on the trim panel underneath the steering wheel with the Phillips-head screwdriver, including the two located above the ashtray. Pull the trim panel away from the dash.
- 2). Put your hand under the dash and behind the instrument panel and push in the retainer button located on the back of the headlamp switch shaft while you pull out on the headlamp switch knob with your hand. Then take the nut off of the switch with an open-end wrench. Pull out the cigarette lighter element from the dashboard and unplug the lighter wire. Remove the cigarette lighter retainer from the dashboard.
- 3). Remove the screws located on the base of the instrument panel that flank the steering column using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Unscrew the screws on the face of the trim panel around the instrument panel with the screwdriver.
- 4). Unscrew the wiper switch ground wire from the dashboard, which is located under the dashboard and just beneath the wiper switch assembly, using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Unplug the wiring from the backside of the instrument panel by hand, then pull the panel out of the dash.
- 5). Unscrew the lens screw from the instrument panel with the Phillips-head screwdriver, then remove the screws around the instrument panel with the screwdriver as well. Remove the transmission indicator from the steering column, as well as the speedometer cable from the panel, by hand. Take the instrument panel away from the dashboard and unplug any remaining wiring.
