How to Create Onesie Baby Dresses

    • 1). Fold the onesie in half by placing the snap bottom at the head hole. Mark the center width (waist width) of the onesie with a washable marking pencil. Fold the onesie in half by placing the sleeves together, and mark the lengthwise center.

    • 2). Measure the waist circumference of the onesie. Cut a piece of material twice that measurement in width and 10 inches in length. This is the skirt.

    • 3). Sew a hem along the bottom edge (long edge) of the skirt. Fold up 1/4 inch along the bottom edge and iron to hold. Turn up another 1/2 inch along the bottom edge to place the raw edge inside the hem. Iron the folded hem to hold in place. Sew with a straight stitch close to inside edge to complete the hem.

    • 4). Measure the waist circumference of the baby at the belly button and cut a piece of 1/2-inch elastic to that measurement.

    • 5). Fold over the top edge of the skirt 1/4 inch to the wrong side and iron to hold in place. Mark the skirt top edge into four equal sections, and do the same with the section of elastic. Place the elastic 1/8 inch below the fold, and sew the elastic to the top edge of the skirt with a wide zigzag stitch. Stretch the elastic as you are sewing to match the markings placed on the skirt and elastic.

    • 6). Pin the side seams (10-inch length) with right sides together. Sew a 1/2-inch seam using a straight stitch. Turn the skirt right side out.

    • 7). Slip the onesie inside the skirt, matching the elastic top to the center-width marking on the onesie. Pin the skirt to the onesie to hold in place, matching the skirt side seam to one of the side seams on the onesie.

    • 8). Sew the skirt to the onesie using a zigzag stitch. Gently stretch the onesie to match the skirt width if needed.
