How to Remove the Battery in a 2006 iPod Nano

    • 1). Turn your iPod off and remove any covers, cables or headphones currently connected. Place it on a clean, steady surface. Turn the iPod over so that the mirrored metal back is facing up.

    • 2). Wedge the separator tool or knife into the right side of the case, where the black or white front of the iPod meets the metal back. Gently separate the two halves of the case. After lifting the back about a quarter of an inch, listen for the "pop" of the plastic tabs disengaging from the metal back.

    • 3). Pull the back of the iPod off of the case. Observe the battery (the only part separate from the circuit board.) If the battery is bloated, warped or leaking, STOP. If you can see damage to the battery, call your local hazardous waste recycling facility for disposal instructions. If the battery appears normal, continue to the next step.

    • 4). Plug in your soldering iron and wait for it to heat up. After five minutes (or however long it takes your iron to heat), hold the iron to the solder pad on the white wire connecting the battery to the circuit board. Hold the iron in place for about twenty seconds. When the component compound is in a liquid state, gently pull the wire off of the circuit board.

    • 5). Repeat Step 4 for the red and black wires directly adjacent to the white wire. When all three wires are free of the circuit board, gently pull the battery off of the iPod case (it's secured with a small piece of tape on the opposite side.) Set the battery aside and unplug the soldering iron.
