How to Use Rockwool Cubes
- 1). Add about a teaspoon of lemon juice to a gallon of water. Since rockwool has a naturally high pH; the lemon/water solution will help neutralize pH levels, reducing the risk of the seeds planted in the rockwool suffering from burned roots.
- 2). Cut a small X in the bottom of each cube and several X's in the bottom of each slab for drainage. Make sure each X is about a half an inch deep. Wear a facemask while cutting and handling to avoid breathing the fibers.
- 3). Soak rockwool cubes or slabs in the lemon water for 24 hours before use. Cutting the X's before soaking will help the rockwool to absorb more water.
- 4). Align the cubes or slabs in rows in the bottom of a plastic tub. Push a seed into each hole in the top of the rockwool and cover with crumbled loose rockwool. This simulates soil, which unlike a plastic covering gives the seed a dark place in which to grow.
- 5). Moisten the rockwool whenever it becomes dry by pouring water into the plastic tubs instead of on the rockwool. Pouring it into the tub avoids washing loose rockwool away from germinating seeds or causing mildew by dampening seedlings' leaves.
