How to Crack the Bark on an Ash Tree

- 1). Hold the chisel up against the bark of the ash tree. Many ash trees have deep ridges in a diamond-shaped bark pattern and the bark is resistant to damage. The chisel will help to pierce it.
- 2). Hit the end of the chisel with a hammer. The force of the hammer will help the chisel to penetrate the ash bark to form a crack in it.
- 3). Peel the bark back where the chisel punctured it, to widen the crack. Remove the bark as needed.
