How to Propagate Mango Trees

    • 1). Use a knife to cut the fruit away from the pit that is in the center. The best way to do this is to cut around the perimeter of the fruit and pull the two sections apart to free the pit.

    • 2). Wash the pit gently in warm tap water. Do not rub vigorously.

    • 3). Fill a container with a good quality potting soil. The container needs to be big enough to hold the pit with three or four inches of extra space all the way around. Dig a small hole in the center of the container that is large enough to bury the pit one inch deep.

    • 4). Place the pit in the hole with the concave side down. Cover loosely with soil and do not pat down.

    • 5). Water the soil deeply enough to cause drainage from the bottom of the pot. Allow the soil to drain thoroughly.

    • 6). Cover the pot with loosely draped plastic wrap or any other clear plastic. An empty two liter bottle with the top cut off will work well if turned upside down over the pot.

    • 7). Place the pot in a sunny location but avoid direct sunlight. This is easily accomplished by placing the pot in a window with sun coming from the North. Check the soil periodically to ensure that it is moist and water when necessary.

    • 8). When growth appears above the soil, remove the plastic and continue to keep the soil moist.

    • 9). Once the seedling is at least six inches tall and well established, move it into a larger pot or plant it outdoors. If your area is prone to harsh weather, it is best to keep the tree in a container until it is a few feet tall so that it can be moved indoors if necessary.
