How to Build a Stucco Garden Bed

    • 1). Make a trench around your garden bed. You want at least the first row of blocks in the wall to be underground for stability. Then add an additional 6 inches.

    • 2). Toss about 3 inches of paver base into the bottom of the trench. Tamp it down. Add another 3 inches and tamp it as well. Level this last layer.

    • 3). Pile on your first row of blocks for the wall. Pound them into place using a mallet, and check for level after installing each block.

    • 4). Put on a few beads of construction adhesive along this first row of blocks. Set the next row in place, staggering blocks as you go. Continue following this procedure until the wall is high enough. Wait one full day before starting the stucco.

    • 5). Trowel on the first layer of stucco right over the concrete blocks of the wall. Use your trowel to even out this coat of stucco and wait one full day.

    • 6). Add another coat of stucco after waiting a day. This coat can also be evened out. Wait another day.

    • 7). Apply the third coat of stucco. However, instead of evening it out, you can add swirling patterns and imperfections that will add greatly to the character of the wall around your garden. For the next two to three days, mist the stucco periodically with water. It will cure harder if it stays moist during this time.
