How to Frame Quilting

    • 1). Select a standard frame with a rabet. A rabet is a sunken space at the back of the frame that the rear foam board or back panel fits into.

    • 2). Measure the frame. Pick a frame that is large enough to accommodate your quilt and all of the quilt border. Since most quilts are too large for frames, the best and cheapest option is to frame a miniature, or smaller, quilt.

    • 3). Measure the backing. Use backing -- glass, foam or wood -- that is the same size as the quilt.

    • 4). Center the quilt on a mat. Punch holes around the edges of the quilt with your needle, approximately 1 inch apart, and into the mat.

    • 5). Sew the quilt to the mat with thread via the holes. Cut the excess length of thread when finished.

    • 6). Place the mat and quilt into the frame, making sure the the quilt side is displayed in the frame.
