Venus Fly Trap Problems

    Feeding

    • Foods other than insects are not appropriate for the Venus flytrap. The size of the insect should be 1/3 the size of the trap. Bugs that are too large cause the trap to remain partially open, introducing bacteria and mold into the plant and killing it. While feeding the plant, sometimes it is necessary to mimic insect movement by wiggling the food within the trap.

    Cultivation

    • Nursery and greenhouse cultivation of the Venus flytrap seems reasonable to perpetuate the species. A strong possibility exists, however, that cultivation could alter the species' genetic structure. Unfavorable greenhouse conditions and disease can also threaten the health of the plant.

    Habitat

    • Drainage of swampy areas and construction have endangered the habitat of the Venus flytrap. The plant requires wet roots, high humidity, full sunlight and poor, acidic soil to exist. When these conditions change, the species cannot thrive in the area.

    Dormancy

    • Venus flytraps require a winter dormancy period. Prior to dormancy, the plant tends to look sickly. Owners need to adapt the temperature for dormancy, chilly but not freezing. The soil should be slightly moist and light is still required.

    Warning

    • Venus flytraps are a protected species. If caught removing them from their natural environment, a violator can suffer the consequences of a substantial fine.
