How to Install Firmware for a Powerbook G4 Without an OS Installed
- 1). Launch the default web browser on another Macintosh computer by double-clicking its icon inside of the "Applications" folder. Go to the Apple website that features firmware updates that can be downloaded for the PowerBook G4 (see Resources).
- 2). Click on the most recent firmware update for the PowerBook G4 that you have. Click the "Save" button on the pop-up window that appears. Quit the web browser once the firmware file has been completely downloaded.
- 3). Insert a blank recordable DVD into the front loading slot of the PowerBook G4. Wait for the icon of the DVD to appear on the desktop. Drag the firmware file from the desktop onto the icon of the DVD. Wait as a copy progress bar appears, fills in from left to right and then disappears.
- 4). Drag the icon of the DVD to the Trash -- the icon of the Trash will now change to a "Burn" icon. Wait as a burning progress bar appears, fills in from left to right and then disappears.
- 5). Drag the icon of the DVD to the Trash. Wait as the DVD is ejected from the disc slot. Remove the DVD.
- 1). Place the PowerBook G4 on a table with the LCD screen raised.
- 2). Press the power button at the upper-right corner once, then press and hold down the power button.
- 3). Continue holding down the power button until the sleep indicator light at the front edge of the machine blinks 3 times quickly, 3 times slowly and then 3 times quickly again, repeatedly.
- 4). Insert the DVD with the firmware file on it into the front-loading slot on the edge of the PowerBook G4 closest to you -- do not release the power button until a long tone sounds.
- 5). Wait as a progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen, fills in from left to right and then disappears when the LCD screen goes blank.
