How to Erase a Diskette

    • 1). Before you format the diskette, turn it over to make sure that the holes at the top are covered. Like VHS tapes, an open hole will prevent you from adding files or formatting the floppy disk.

    • 2). To make the diskette writable, move the small tab up to cover the exposed hole in your floppy disk.

    • 3). Insert the diskette into a working A drive. Wait for the computer to locate and read the drive. When the light stops flashing, you can move on to the next step.

    • 4). Open the "My Computer" icon and go to the diskette drive. Right click on the drive and select "Format."

    • 5). A new window will appear; it will walk you through the process to begin formatting your diskette.

    • 6). At the option screen, you will have two ways to format the diskette. If you are in a hurry and simply want to free up space, choose the "Quick Format" option. If you want to remove sensitive information, go with the "Full Format" option. Quick Format will take a few seconds to wipe the floppy disk, and the second option will take up to a minute and half, depending on your computer's speed.
