How to Install Windows XP X64 Over Windows Vista
- 1). Back up your data to an external hard drive. You can manually back up your important data or use a backup utility. If using a third-party application, be sure the program is compatible with both Vista and Windows XP x64. Unplug your external hard drive once the back up is complete.
- 2). Insert the XP 64-bit installation disc into the computer's optical drive and restart. As it boots up, a message will appear asking you to press any key to boot from the inserted CD or DVD. Press any key.
- 3). Press "Enter" at the "Welcome to Setup" screen to begin installation. Press "F8" to accept the End User License Agreement.
- 4). Select the regular installation path. Do not opt for "Upgrade." Highlight your current Windows Vista installation (C: by default) by using the arrow keys when prompted to select an installation destination. Press "D" to delete the Vista partition. You will have to confirm this action by pressing "L."
- 5). Press "C" to create a new partition from the created free space. Select "NTFS" as the file system, as this is the default file system of Windows.
- 6). Follow the on-screen prompts to continue the installation. Insert your product key when prompted. Enter your time zone and desired user name when prompted. Once the installation completes, the system will restart. Remove the installation disc as the computer starts back up. Vista will no longer be on your system, replaced by a fresh copy of Windows XP 64-bit edition.
- 7). Reconnect the external hard drive via its supplied cable and restore your files.
