How to Reset the Ink Level on My HP Deskjet 3820

    Tape Method

    • 1). Press the HP Deskjet 3820's "Power" button to turn it on. Flip open the cover, and the ink cradle will move to the center position.

    • 2). Lift up the ink cradle latch to remove the ink cartridge. Flip over the cartridge so its copper connectors are facing up.

    • 3). Place a small piece of adhesive tape over the four copper connectors in the upper-left corner of the cartridge. Reinsert the cartridge into the printer and close the lid.

    • 4). Wait for a minute as the printer attempts to reset. When the cartridge cradle goes back to its original position, open the lid and remove the cartridge again.

    • 5). Remove the piece of tape from the cartridge. Use the tape to cover the four copper contacts in the bottom-right corner. Replace the cartridge. Wait for it to reset its position and then remove it again.

    • 6). Remove the tape and put the cartridge back into the printer. This usually resets the ink level of the cartridge. If it does not, take out the cartridge.

    • 7). Put a very small piece of tape over the copper contact on the bottom of the far left row. Ensure that the tape is not covering any other contacts. Replace the cartridge. When it resets, remove it.

    • 8). Leave the tape on the first contact. Put another piece of tape over the bottom contact on the far right row. Reinsert the cartridge, wait for it to reset, and take it back out. Remove the tape and replace the cartridge to reset the ink level.

    Cartridge-Cycling Method

    • 1). Place the refilled ink cartridge into the Deskjet 3820. After the cartridge is recognized and a test page prints, remove it.

    • 2). Put a full ink cartridge into the printer. Wait for it to print a test page. Remove the full cartridge.

    • 3). Place a different full cartridge in the printer. As before, let the printer produce a test page and then remove the cartridge.

    • 4). Reinsert the refilled cartridge. After the test page prints, the ink level is reset.
