How to Replace the Wiper Motor on a 1998 GMC Pickup Truck

    • 1). Turn the GMC truck's engine off and make sure the wipers are in their neutral position. Open the hood and use a socket wrench to disconnect the truck's negative battery cable.

    • 2). Lift the wiper arms and disconnect the wiring harness at the bottom of the arm by pulling it off the arm itself. Disconnect the wiper fluid hose from the water pump on the arm in a similar fashion.

    • 3). Insert a screwdriver into the access hole on the wiper arm and loosen the attaching screws to loosen the wiper arm. Remove the arm.

    • 4). Remove the three wiper motor attaching screws. Remove the motor assembly itself from the windshield wiper linkage mechanism. The linkage mechanism is what connects the arm, the motor and the electrical components.

    • 5). Place the replacement motor onto the linkage mechanism and reinstall the three screws. Reattach the arm and the retaining screw.

    • 6). Reattach the wiring harness and the hose to the water pump. Reconnect the battery and close the hood.
