How to Identify a Kenmore Sewing Machine

    • 1). Look for the Kenmore brand label or name on the equipment. Modern-day Kenmore machines should have the label indicated on the side of the product, either on its head or at its base. Vintage Kenmores were made under the White company, by the Sears Roebuck corporation, from the 1930s to the 1950s. The formal Kenmore label may not be on these machines. If it is, it is followed by a two-digit number. Examples you may encounter include "Kenmore 58" and "Kenmore 71."

    • 2). Check for a model number, which could be anywhere on the machine. The majority of Kenmore sewing machines are identified with a number that begins with three digits, such as "158" or "304," followed by a dash and several other digits.

    • 3). Join the International Sewing Machine Collectors' Society, whose members include sewing machine experts. Once accepted, you can post a description and an image of your sewing machine for these experts to assist you in identifying it.

    • 4). Ask about the machine at the website SewVac Doctor, which troubleshoots problems with sewing machines. Click the email link on the upper left-hand side of the home page, and explain you want to verify your machine is a Kenmore. Include a photo of the machine with your question.
