How to Stop a Blaster Worm

    • 1). Unplug your network wire from your computer.

    • 2). Press "Ctrl," Alt" and "Delete" simultaneously.

    • 3). Click the "Task Manager" to open it. Select the "Processes" tab. Click to highlight "MSBLAST.EXE" in the list and click the "End Process" button.

    • 4). Click "Start" and select "Run." This opens the Run dialog box.

    • 5). Type "regedit" in the "Open" field and click "OK." This opens the Windows registry.

    • 6). Navigate in the left-hand pane to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsCurrentVersion\Run. Look in the right-hand pane for the value name "windows auto update" and whose data is "msblast.exe." Right-click to delete this sub key value.

    • 7). Click "Start." Click "Search" and select "For Files and Folders."

    • 8). Search for all instances of "msblast.exe" and right-click all resulting files. Select "Delete" for each.

    • 9). Click "Start" and select "Run." Type "DCOMCNFG.EXE" in the "Open" text field and press "Enter."

      Click to expand "Console Root\Component Services\Computers\My Computer." Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties."

      Click the "Default Properties" tab.

      Click to remove the check mark next to "Enable distributed COM on this computer." Click "OK."

      Reconnect your network wire back into your computer.

      Download and install the Microsoft 823980 security patch (MS03-026) if you do not already have it (see Resources). Click to expand "Patch Availability" under the "General Information" section. Click to open the "Microsoft Download Center" link for the patch download for your particular operating system.
