How to Clone Plants With Hydroponics

Take Cuttings from the Original Plant

    • 1). Mix a solution of acidic water to soak the rockwool cubes. Use your pH meter to test the pH of the solution. The pH should measure 5.5. Soak the rockwool cubes overnight in a watertight container.

    • 2). Select a healthy, vigorous plant to take cuttings from. Since you are creating cloned plants, the seedlings will display the exact characteristics of the original, so be sure to choose one with characteristics you want.

    • 3). Prepare the cloning solution. Mix 6 ounces of cloning solution per gallon of water. Test the water to be sure it is at a pH of 6.5.

    • 4). Prepare your work area. Set up the propagation tray and sterilize the razor blade with rubbing alcohol. Place the cloning gel in a container close to the plants.

    • 5). Choose a stem on the original plant to cut. Look for one with at least two to three sets of leaves.

    • 6). Make a clean, 45-degree angled cut between the first and second sets of leaves. Working quickly, remove all but the top set of leaves from the cutting and immediately dip it in the container of cloning gel.

    • 7). Place the cutting in a prepared rockwool cube in the propagation tray. Water them with nutrient solution, keeping the cuttings moist at all times.

    • 8). When the cuttings have developed a root structure, transfer the rockwool cubes to the plant tray in your hydroponics system.
