How to Fish for Maine Shrimp With Traps

    • 1). Plan to go shrimp fishing when the tide is relatively low. The water should be, at most, five feet deep.

    • 2). Place your bait inside your trap. Good bait to use is herring or mullet chopped up and shaped into a flat disc about eight to 10 inches wide and two inches thick.

    • 3). Lower the shrimp trap into the water. Allow the trap to settle at the bottom. Shrimp traps will have a rope that is looped around the mouth of a net. When the rope is slack, the mouth of the net will open wide allowing shrimp to swim into the trap. When the rope is taunt, the mouth will close.

    • 4). Check on the trap every four to five hours. When it is full, hoist the trap back up slowly.
