How to Kill Cypress Tree Roots in Your Yard

    • 1). Drill seven to 10 holes into the top of the cypress trunk as deep down as you can go with a 1-inch diameter drill bit and a hand drill.

    • 2). Wet the surface of the cypress tree trunk and the ground around the trunk with a garden hose.

    • 3). Fill the holes in the cypress tree trunk with nitrogen-rich fertilizer and then cover the trunk with the plastic tarp.

    • 4). Cover the tarp with a layer of bark mulch and then wet the mulch with the hose. The bark mulch prevents sunlight from reaching the stump and helps trap moisture under the tarp.

    • 5). Remove the bark mulch and tarp weekly, repack the holes with nitrogen-rich fertilizer and wet the area with the hose. While doing this, inspect the tree trunk for signs of rot and decay. Once you can pull the wood apart with your hands, you can stop treating the trunk with fertilizer. This indicates the trunk and root system rotted beyond the ability for regrowth.
