How to Paint on Buttons

    • 1). Cut a square from felt that is 1 inch larger than the button on all sides. Glue the back of the button to the felt.

    • 2). Fill in any holes in the button with spackle. Use a toothpick to fill the holes in the button with spackle putty. Allow the putty to dry for one hour. Sand the top of the button to smooth the putty.

    • 3). Mix a few drops of blue paint into about 2 tablespoons of water. Paint this thin paint mixture onto the top of the buttons. Allow the paint to dry overnight.

    • 4). Trace the outline of the shape you want to paint onto the button with a pencil.

    • 5). Paint the outline of the shape with the color you want to use and fill it in with the same color. Allow the base coat to dry for one hour.

    • 6). Add details to the buttons in contrasting colors. Since the buttons are so small, you do not have to do much shading or highlighting. The buttons will be painted with more of an impressionistic style of painting to give the idea of the shape when viewed from a distance.

    • 7). Add tiny details, such as image outlines, eyes and other small details, with a very small brush. This is what will make the design pop. Allow the paint to dry for one hour.

    • 8). Cover the entire surface of the button with a glaze to protect the surface from damage. Allow this to dry for 24 hours before removing the button from the felt square.
