Flowers That Grown on a Stem

The long, green stems of roses are famous for their pointy thorns, which keep away animals that might otherwise eat or damage the flowers. There are dozens of rose varieties of which many are hybrids that have been created by gardeners cross-breeding specimens to create new species though all roses belong to the genus Rosa. Though considered a symbol of the Netherlands, tulips actually originated in the Middle East and have been grown by the Turks since 1000 BC, according to the Holland website. Tulips grow from large bulbs and come in many colors, including orange, yellow, red and pink and were first brought to Europe in the 17th century, where a collecting frenzy resulted in the flowers selling for hundreds of dollars. A symbol of friendship, daffodils consist of triangular petals centered on a trumpet-shaped corona perched on a green stem which is about 15 inches long. The American Daffodil Society states that there are more than 25,000 varieties of daffodil, thanks to the hybridization efforts of gardeners and like tulips, they also grow from bulbs. One of a small number of crop species to originate in North America, sunflowers may have been domesticated as early as 1000 BC, according to Purdue University. The oil and seeds of sunflowers are commonly consumed by humans and the plant's meal can be used to make feed for livestock. Sunflowers have bright yellow petals which surround a center composed of dozens of tiny florets and the largest varieties grow to over 10 feet tall.
