What Does Auto Dry Mean on a Dryer?

    Function

    • Auto dry cycles are preprogrammed to dry different types of clothing, based on the articles' wetness and fiber type. For example, many dryers have a jeans cycle that dries denim and other heavyweight items on medium-high heat for around 50 minutes. A delicate cycle dries lingerie and blouses on extra-low heat for around 20 minutes.

    Benefits

    • Auto cycles take the guesswork out of drying clothes. You never have to wonder what the best temperature and time length is for a particular type of clothing, because the cycle is set for you. Clothing is less likely to shrink or become wrinkled when you use the appropriate auto cycles.

    Features

    • Many modern dryers have additional features, such as a "Bulky Bedding" cycle. In addition to automatic cycles, manual cycles allow you to set temperatures and times yourself. This works well if you are touching up a slightly damp article or removing wrinkles. Some dryers have a damp dry signal that alerts you when the load is 80 percent dry, so you can remove it before wrinkles have a chance to set.

    Considerations

    • Neither automatic nor manual cycles work well if air can't circulate freely through the dryer. Clean the lint screen after each use and avoid overloading the dryer. Dry such similar items as heavy towels together for maximum efficiency.

Dryers may end the automatic cycle early if the dryer isn't level. If you notice this problem, move the dryer slightly so it's level on the ground. You can also ease the dryer slightly forward so it leans on your stomach until the weight is off the rear of the machine, and then gently ease it back down. If this doesn't work, check your owner's manual.
