How to Change a Bake Element in a GE Electric Stove

    • 1). Disconnect the power to the GE electric stove. If you have a slide-in unit without a utility drawer, turn off the circuit breaker inside the home electrical panel. If your GE is a free-standing unit, pull out the utility drawer and reach inside the drawer opening to unplug the stove power cord from the electrical outlet.

    • 2). Open the oven door, and remove both of the cooking racks. The cooking racks pull straight out of the oven.

    • 3). Remove the screws securing the bake element to the rear wall of the GE stove with a nut driver. Lift up on the front of the bake element, and pull the element toward you until you can see the wires attaching to the element terminals through the rear wall.

    • 4). Disconnect the wires from the bake element terminals. Most wires use simple slip-on connectors that you pull off the terminals with your fingers. Some models have screws that you must remove to disconnect the wires. Tape the wire ends to the rear oven wall so that they do not slip behind the wall through the opening.

    • 5). Take the faulty element to an appliance repair shop or GE authorized dealer for a replacement. Compare the new element to the old one to ensure the size is the same and the mounting is the same.

    • 6). Set the new bake element inside the oven, and attach the wires to the bake element terminals. Carefully stuff the excess wire into the opening in the rear oven wall, and push the element mounting plate flush against the oven wall. Secure with the retaining screws.

    • 7). Slide the cooking racks back inside the oven, and close the oven door. Plug your GE power cord back into the electrical outlet, and slide the utility drawer back into place if you have a free-standing unit. If you unit is a slide-in, turn the circuit breaker on to power the appliance.
