How to Repair the Suction on a Vacuum Cleaner

    • 1). Remove the vacuum cleaner's power plug from the wall outlet it is plugged into. Press the button at the top of the front cover to release the cover. Pull the cover off the vacuum cleaner. Remove the vacuum bag from the nozzle seated against the inside top of the vacuum cleaner. Place the bag aside if it is not filled enough to discard; otherwise throw the bag in the trash.

    • 2). Upend the vacuum cleaner. Remove the screws from the four corners on the bottom that surround the slot where the bristle brushes are -- use a Phillips screwdriver. Slide or pull the plate off the bottom compartment -- depending on the make and model number.

    • 3). Rotate the bristles clockwise and counterclockwise to loosen dirt and other contaminants, such as dust balls. Pull these out from the compartment and throw in the trash. Wipe the inside edges of the compartment with a paper towel. Wipe both sides of the plate and its edges with the paper towel. Blow out the inside of the compartment with compressed air.

    • 4). Locate the fan belt that is at one end of the compartment. Pull the fan belt off the hubs it is resting against. Lift the fan belt out of the compartment and throw it away in the trash.

    • 5). Stretch the replacement fan belt between the fingers of one hand. Place the replacement fan belt over the hubs in the same position that the original belt occupied. Remove your hand from the flan belt.

    • 6). Return the plate to its original position on the bottom of the vacuum cleaner. Reattach the screws. Place the vacuum cleaner upright. Return the vacuum bag -- or use a new one -- to the inside of the vacuum cleaner. Place the cover back on the vacuum cleaner.
