Paper towel holders are typically inexpensive and come in many different types of wood or plastic. They are available at home supply, discount and home décor stores, or you can purchase them for a bit of pocket change at garage sales when people redecorate. The holders are useful for organizing many other items, or you can create handy crafts out of this versatile kitchen accessory. - Attach a paper towel holder to the back of your child's closet or on his bedroom wall. Slide a roll of art paper onto the holder. Store a roll of masking tape, crayons, watercolor paints and colorful markers in a decorative basket near the easel. Simply roll down a large section of the art paper and tape it at the ends with masking tape. The paper should be thick enough that no colors will bleed through onto the wall. Allow your child to draw his masterpiece, then just tear off the artwork and pull down a fresh section of paper for his next creation.
- Make your own paper towel holder that you can decorate according to the seasons. Locate a square or round piece of wood, available at hobby and craft or discount stores. Glue a wooden dowel into the center of the wood with contact cement and allow it to dry. Slide a new roll of paper towels onto the wood dowel. Place another wood dowel or even a ruler along the outside edge of the paper towels and glue it into place. You will use this as an edge to pull your paper towels off one by one. Get flat, seasonal wood shapes from a craft store and paint them with acrylic paints. Typically, these shapes are used for seasonal ornaments or other types of crafts and have the outline drawn on them, making them simple to paint. A wide variety of shapes are available. You can paint an elf for the Christmas season, a duck or flower for the spring and a pumpkin for Halloween. Attach a piece of hook and loop tape, such as Velcro, to the outer dowel or ruler with glue. Put the other part of the hook and loop tape onto the back of the wood cutouts. This will enable you to change the pictures with the seasons.
- Attach a paper towel holder to the door of a cabinet or a wall in your craft room. Place all your rolls of ribbon along the rod with the loose ribbon ends hanging down in front. When you are wrapping gifts or creating crafts, you can easily see all your ribbon selections organized in one spot. If the paper towel holder has a basket or shelf on top, this is an excellent place to keep small, decorative baskets to hold cellophane tape, sewing needs, buttons or other craft items.
