How to Change the Oil in a Type One Volkswagon Beetle
- 1). Locate the plate that holds the oil filter in place. The filter plate is a round plate with six bolts surrounding the outside and one larger bolt in the center.
- 2). Loosen the middle bolt in the filter plate about one-quarter of a turn with the appropriate-size millimeter wrench. Do not, however, remove the middle bolt.
- 3). Place an empty container under the car to catch the draining oil. The Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle will hold about 2 1/2 quarts of oil.
- 4). Loosen the center bolt until the oil begins to drain. Once the bolt is removed, wipe the bolt clean and set aside. Wait until the oil ceases to drain.
- 5). Remove the oil-filled container from beneath the car.
- 6). Unscrew the six bolts around the filter plate with the appropriate millimeter wrench. Once the bolts are removed, the filter plate will still be attached to the engine.
- 7). Remove the filter plate by inserting a flat-head screwdriver through the center hole and wriggling the filter plate loose. The oil filter should be attached to the filter plate. If the filter is not attached to the filter plate, pull the oil filter out of the exposed hole by hand.
- 8). Use the flat-head screwdriver to scrape any old gaskets from the Volkswagen engine and filter plate. Wipe the filter plate with a clean rag and set aside.
- 9). Open the new seal kit containing two oil filter gaskets and washers for each of the filter plate bolts.
- 10
Remove the new oil filter from the box and place the new oil filter gaskets on both ends of the new filter. - 11
Insert the new oil filter into the exposed hole that the old filter previously occupied. - 12
Attach the new washers from the filter kit onto the filter plate bolts. - 13
Set the filter plate into place, and secure with the filter plate bolts. Once all the bolts are in place, tighten the bolts with the appropriate-size millimeter wrench. - 14
Remove the cap to the oil filler pipe on the engine. Pour the new oil through the oil pipe. After two quarts of oil have been added, check the oil dipstick to determine the oil level. Continue filling with oil until the oil reaches the "full" mark on the dipstick. - 15
Replace the oil filler cap and close the hood to the engine. - 16
Start your Beetle and check under the car for any oil leaks. If oil leaks are present, the bolts on the filter plate may need to be tightened further.
