How to Make a Wooden Turtle
- 1). Develop your fine muscle control by practicing carving small turtles out of bars of soap.
- 2). Set the piece of basswood on a large, flat surface. Draw a basic bird’s eye view outline of the turtle on the top of the piece of basswood. Include the top of the turtle’s head and neck, shell, legs and tail. Cut away the wood around this outline.
- 3). Draw outlines of the turtle’s head, tail and each leg on the sides of the wood, matching them up with the top outline of the turtle. Cut away the excess wood around these outlines.
- 4). Sweep up and throw away the small wood chips, and save the larger pieces of wood for future projects. Wipe up any wood dust with a damp sponge.
- 5). Draw an outline of the turtle’s underside. Cut away the wood in this outline until the turtle’s underside no longer touches the floor.
- 6). Carve out the underside of the turtle’s legs.
- 7). Sand the turtle lightly with the medium-grained sandpaper. Wipe up the sawdust with the sponge.
- 8). Draw the surface details of the turtle, including the sections of the shell top, shell underside, face and foot details.
- 9). Carve out the details of the turtle. Throw out the small pieces of wood. Wipe up any sawdust with a damp sponge.
