How to Recondition Wood Picture Frames
- 1). Remove pictures from the frame before beginning any restoration steps to prevent damage to the picture.
- 2). Fill a gallon-sized bowl with warm water and 5 teaspoons of wood oil soap. Use a soap specially formulated to clean wood without damaging the surface of the wood.
- 3). Dip a wash cloth into the mixture and apply to the wooden frame. Rub the frame with the solution and cloth to remove wax, dust and dirt buildup from the frame.
- 4). Finish the cleaning by allowing the frame to dry completely.
- 1). Apply a small dab of toothpaste to a white spot or blemish on the wooden frame after cleaning and allowing the frame to dry.
- 2). Rub the toothpaste into the white spot with a clean and dry wash cloth for several minutes.
- 3). Wipe away the toothpaste and then blot the area with a damp cloth to remove any residue from the toothpaste.
- 1). Cut a small hand-sized piece of very finely gritted sandpaper.
- 2). Sand the wooden frame with the sandpaper to remove any cracks or imperfections in the wood and to smooth the finish. Sandpaper should only be used after cleaning has been performed.
- 3). Continue to rub the frame with the sandpaper, rubbing with the grain of the wood, until the finish of the frame is smooth.
- 4). Apply any finish to the sanded frame to complete the desired look. This could include paint, stain or a simple wax to preserve the frame.
