What Are XPS Files?

    Making an XPS File

    • Any program in Windows that allows you to print can make an XPS document. Instead of printing to a printer, select XPS format from the drop-down menu.

    Viewing an XPS Document

    • While all programs can create XPS documents, all cannot read them. The only program that allows you to read, sign and set permissions is the XPS Viewer. It is included with Windows Vista or later and Internet Explorer 6 or later. Otherwise, you must have .NET Framework 3.0 or later installed; it includes the program.

    XPS Features

    • XPS documents retain color and page formatting, preserving the original document's appearance. XPS files also can contain raster images, made possible through the use of the Reference Raster Image Processor.

    Verification and Protection

    • You can sign the XPS file digitally, which protects your security and the validity of the document. A digital signature ensures that the document did not get changed after the signature was created. You also can modify the XPS document and decide who can copy, print and sign your document.
