How to Spray Stencils on Wood or Stone

    Wood

    • 1). Sand the wood with sandpaper if necessary to create a smooth, even surface.

    • 2). Coat the wood with a wood primer and allow it to dry.

    • 3). Attach a piece of double-sided tape to the back of the stencil and adhere the stencil to the wood surface. The tape helps keep the stencil from shifting while you paint.

    • 4). Cover any exposed areas of the wood you do not want to paint with newspaper.

    • 5). Stand back from the stencil and wood and hold the spray can at arm's length. Inhaling the fumes of spray paint can be hazardous to your health so standing away from the spray stream will be key.

    • 6). Spray the wood until the stencil area is covered in paint.

    • 7). Remove the stencil and newspaper, and allow to dry.

    Stone

    • 1). Select a smooth stone from your yard or from a local craft store.

    • 2). Wash the stone with soap and water and allow to dry completely.

    • 3). Use double-sided tape to adhere the stencil to the stone's surface. Cover any exposed areas you do not want paint on with newspaper.

    • 4). Stand back and spray the stone until the stencil area is covered.

    • 5). Remove the stencil and newspaper, and allow to dry.
