Is Your iPhone iOS 9 Compatible? Find Out Here
Last Updated: June 8, 2015
Every year, when Apple debuts a new version of the iOS, there's a mad dash to figure out whether your iPhone is compatible with the new software. And then, even if it is, there's the question of whether it makes sense to upgrade an older device, since that can mean slow performance and a lot of bugs.
When it comes to iOS 9, Apple's new operating system for the iPhone and iPod touch, the list of supported devices is longer and the decision is a little easier.
That's because iOS 9 specifically focuses on better support for older devices.
Even though it won't be released until Fall 2015, you can find out today what devices are compatible with iOS 9 in this list.
iPhone
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 5S
- iPhone 5C
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 4S
iPod touch
- 5th generation iPod touch
iPad
- iPad Air 2
- iPad Air
- 4th generation iPad
- 3rd generation iPad
- iPad 2
- iPad mini 3
- iPad mini 2
- iPad mini
If you don't see your device on this list, then it can't run iOS 9. That may be disappointing, but don't despair: Apple will continue to update iOS 8 for a while longer, so even though you won't get the benefit of all the latest and greatest features, you'll still get bug fixes and other improvements.
If your device isn't on this list, it's probably still compatible with iOS 8 and iOS 7.
Also, if your device is so old that it's not supported here, you may want to think about upgrading to something new. You're probably eligible for a discounted upgrade by now (most users who have had their device for more than 2 years are), so shop around and you might be able to get a great deal and some slick new hardware (but always remember to check when the next model is coming out so that you don't buy just before something new is released).
Getting iOS 9 Early
If your device is compatible with iOS 9 and you want to start using iOS 9 before it's released to the general public, there's a way to make that happen. Find out how here.
