How to Make a Template for Quilting to Use With a Ruler

    • 1). Place an uncut plastic template sheet onto the cutting mat to measure and cut it. Determine the dimensions and shape you wish to cut the plastic sheet to make the template.

    • 2). Position the quilting ruler over the plastic template sheet to measure it. After measuring and positioning the ruler where you want to cut the template, draw a line along the edge of the ruler onto the plastic. Repeat this process to measure and draw the template shape on the plastic.

    • 3). Cut out the plastic along the lines you drew using either the rotary cutter or a pair of scissors.

    • 4). Place the cut template onto the cutting mat. Align the ruler over the template and mark the center of the template. Knowing the center of the template will enable you to position the template over fabric patterns for special placement.

    • 5). Lay fabric on the cutting mat to cut it. Position the quilting template over the fabric and place the quilting ruler along the edge of the template. Cut along the template with the ruler to cut out the fabric. Using the ruler will prevent the rotary cutter from accidentally cutting the plastic template.

    • 6). Reposition the quilting ruler along another edge of the template and continue cutting the fabric to cut out the fabric piece. Set aside the fabric piece after you finish cutting it out and repeat the process to cut out as many pieces as you require.
