DIY Easy Hooded Coat for a Halloween Costume

    Preparation

    • 1). Cut two pieces of fabric each five feet long. One will be the front of the coat and the other will be the back of the coat. Measure across the back of your hips. Cut the width of the two pieces at least two feet wider than your hip measurement.

    • 2). Fold the two pieces in half lengthwise and lay them on top of each other. Make sure the folded edges are together and that both pieces are aligned perfectly with each other along all four edges.

    • 3). Cut a quarter circle out of one end of the folded pieces of fabric from the folded side to the edge of one short end. This will be the neckline.

    • 4). Cut along the fold of one piece of fabric. This will be the front of the coat. The other piece will be the back. Set the two pieces aside.

    • 5). Cut two rectangles 24 inches long and 14 inches wide. These will be the sleeves. Set aside.

    • 6). Cut one rectangle 34 inches long and 26 inches wide. This is the hood. Set aside.

    Assembly

    • 1). Sew the two front pieces to the back piece at the shoulders, right sides together. Be sure to match up the outer edges of the coat and the cut edges of the neckline.

    • 2). Place one short end of one of the sleeve pieces to the coat, right sides together, and hold in place with straight pins. Make sure that the center of the sleeve is even with the shoulder seam.

    • 3). Repeat step two with the other sleeve.

    • 4). Turn the coat wrong sides out and pin the sides of the coat together beginning at the armpit seam where the sleeves attach to the coat and work your way out both directions. Machine stitch both side seams.

    • 5). Turn the coat right sides out.

    • 6). Take the hood piece and fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. It is important to have the wrong sides together. Machine stitch with a basting stitch close to the edge.

    • 7). Fold the hood in half bringing the two short ends of the long rectangle together. Pin the basted seam together. Machine stitch just outside of the basting stitches.

    • 8). Turn the hood so that the raw edges of the seam are inside.

    • 9). Place the raw edges of the hood around the neckline, matching the seam of the hood with the center of the back piece of the coat. Pin in place. Machine stitch.

    • 10

Open the bias tape and place one end just over the center of the back of the coat over at the inside of the hood. Pin in place. Continue pinning the bias tape around the neckline to the front corner of the coat, and on down the front of the coat. Repeat on the other side beginning by overlapping the bias tape at the back of the hood. Machine stitch.

    • 11

Turn the bias tape in and fold in half all around the coat. Pin in place then machine stitch.

    • 12

      Trim all loose threads.
